The Best a Man can Get!

Georgia – Gender is distinct from sex. When describing a man, sex aside, they are rational, show leadership, can handle the demands of the real world and are overall superior to women. These ideas are set within the ideologies of today. This ad shows a stereotypical man. His crossed arms signify that he is in charge and tough. His stern face connotes seriousness and rational thought with the ability to handle the demands of the real world. His fancy black suit shows superiority. The diamonds in his ears signify his high-class. His razor in his hand is “the best a man can get”. The model is David Beckham an International Soccer Star who receives a lot of respect and is well renowned.

George – One must take note of the text which reads, “This Father’s Day, give Dad the power of the world’s best shave”. He connotes that dad deserves the best. This is much like women’s beauty products which women use, “Because they’re worth it!”

This is one of the many ads that shows that visual media is accessible to us all unlike language. One does not need language to read this ad. They see the superior man with the Gillette razor in his hand. That’s all that needs to be read (visually!).

Georgia – So far, out of all the advertisements analyzed, all the models represented have been Caucasian. This demonstrates history in which we lived in a white society where white was seen as the pure and superior race. Much has changed these days but Caucasians are mostly represented which give them superiority. They dominate the visual representations within magazine advertisements throughout North America.
